Choosing to have a smaller "cutting cake" is definitely more common with today's couples. They save money by not purchasing a large wedding cake (that many couples or guests do not like, or might not eat), and therefore are able to provide a variety of desserts from which all guests will be certain to find something that they will enjoy.
